Misconceptions About Breast Augmentation and Lift

The Facts About Breast Augmentation and Lift

There are many misconceptions that surround breast augmentation and breast lift procedures, and this blog will go over a few of them and hopefully give more insight into what is okay to believe and what isn’t.

Breast Lift and Augmentation Simultaneously is only One Procedure

Many are led to believe that if they have chosen to get both an augmentation as well as a lift – at the same time, they will only undergo one procedure. This is false – breast augmentation and breast lifts are two very different procedures; therefore, they will be conducted as such. They are somewhat opposite procedures – while one makes the breast larger, the other lifts and minimizes sag. Depending on the patient and what the surgeon decides – it may not be suggested to undergo these two at the same time, rather, let the body heal in between.

Incisions Around the Nipple Lead to No Scars

With any surgical procedure, there is going to be the possibility of scarring. It also depends on how advanced your plastic surgeon is, and how your body heals. Are there some incision areas that camouflage scarring better than others? Absolutely – but it is not said that just because you choose an incision around the nipple, there will be no scars. If these are concerns of yours from the beginning, it is important to discuss the best options for you, with your surgeon prior to making any decisions.

These are the most common misconceptions about the breast augmentation and lift procedures together – while they have some on their own, the most important thing is to find out all the information you can about the procedures while finding a trusted surgeon whom you feel very comfortable with discussing your concerns, goals and future plans. They are highly trained and experienced professionals who know human anatomy very well and can take a look at your body, skin type, consider age, and history – while guiding you down the safest path to achieve the results that you are looking for.

Breast Augmentation Vs. Breast Lift

Many women are interested in enhancing the contours of their body using breast surgery. Breast augmentation is our most popular procedure by far, but some women may find that breast lifts can give them what they’re looking for. Dr. O’Neill performs both procedures in our Charleston, SC plastic surgery clinic, but we wanted to go through the basics to help you narrow down your options.

These are two separate procedures performed for two different reasons, but they can be combined into one surgery to see the benefits of both, described below.

Breast Augmentation

Procedure - Breast augmentation is the procedure used to increase the size of a woman’s breasts using implants. Dr. O’Neill uses small, easily hidden incisions below, to the side, or through the nipple (depending on your needs) to insert an implant of the desired size. Augmentation should not be performed when a woman wants to only correct sagging breasts.

Recovery - After surgery, patients should accept pain, soreness, and swelling for a few weeks, but most woman can return to work and light activity in a matter of days. Lifting is typically restricted for up to six weeks after surgery. Scars from surgical incisions should fade over the course of a year.

Results – After swelling has gone down, women can expect an enhanced, larger appearance at their desired cup size.

Breast Lift

Dr. O’Neill performs these lifts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding skin and tissue. Breast lifts can also reduce an enlarged areola. Breast lifts do not increase the size of small breasts.

Recovery - Swelling and discomfort should be expected for the first month after surgery. The incisions are sometimes different depending on the degree of lifting required as well, but incisions should fade over the course of a year.

Results – Women can expect breasts to be raised and firmed with the procedure. The new breast contour and shape should refine after 1 to 3 months with healing.
