Importance of Sun Protection

Various campaigns, educational materials, and professions are devoted to informing the public about the importance of sun protection, and yet skin cancer is still one of the most common forms of cancer. Not only can wearing sunscreen daily help reduce your risk of developing skin cancer, but it can also ensure the health and youthfulness of your skin. As the days get longer and the UV rays grow more powerful, we’re devoting some time to discuss the importance of sun protection and provide you with a guide to some of our favorite sun care products.

The Importance of Sun Protection

As we previously mentioned, daily use of sunscreen helps to block UV rays. UV rays are one of the top risk factors for different types of skin cancer, including basal cell skin cancer, squamous cell skin cancer, and melanoma. UV rays are also responsible for at least 80% of all visible signs of aging. This means that regular sun protection can also help prevent premature aging and promote healthy, smooth skin.

Wearing sunscreen also reduces the risk of hyperpigmentation and prevents inflammation and sensitivity. This is especially important for those with skin conditions like rosacea. Fortunately, there are a variety of different sunscreens that tackle various skin concerns and skin types. At O’Neill, we have a variety of sunscreen formulas and finishes to help you find your perfect match this summer. Here are some of our favorites:

Sunforgettable® Total Protection™ Brush-on Shield SPF 50 by Colorscience

The only powder sunscreen recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation, this mineral skin shield offers powerful protection and coverage in a convenient on-the-go applicator. Powder is perfect for absorbing excess oil on those humid Charleston days while the SPF keeps UV damage at bay.

EltaMD UV Aero Broad-Spectrum SPF 45

Sunscreen sprays are perfect for easy application, but some formulas can make it difficult to see which spots you’ve missed. This spray sunscreen by EltaMD keeps the convenience of the spray but ensures full coverage by spraying on white before drying clear. When it comes to sunscreen, reapplying is key, and this product makes it easy to spray while you’re on the move.

Physical Matte UV Defense SPF 50 by Skinceuticals

This matte sunscreen formula by Skinceuticals is perfect for normal, oily, and combination skin. While some skip the SPF when applying makeup to avoid having an oily face, the Physical Matte UV Defense is the perfect base for every day. Enhanced with aerated silica technology, it is proven to maintain a matte finish even in hot, humid conditions, making it perfect to wear alone or under makeup.

Sunscreen & Primer SPF 30 by Zo Skin Health

This ultra-lightweight sunscreen and primer hybrid was designed to hydrate and prep your makeup while protecting against the aging effects of UV rays. This formula also works to reduce the appearance of imperfections with its blurring effect.

Daily Shield Tinted SPF 50 Sunscreen by Epionce

Not all tinted sunscreens are created equal, but with Daily Shield, you don’t have to sacrifice the importance of sun protection for a glowing even skin tone. This tinted sunscreen is also water-resistant, making it perfect for beach days or pool parties. This formula blends flawlessly and is gentle enough for sensitive skin.
