Rhinoplasty
Nose Reshaping
The shape and size of the nose can cause confidence and self-esteem issues at any age. Nose reshaping, also known as rhinoplasty, improves the size, shape, and proportion of the nose with an outpatient surgical procedure.
About
The goal of the surgery may be to improve the overall shape and proportion of the nose, correct structural defects, or both. Since the cartilage that makes up most of the nose is flexible, final results are not completely predictable and can take several weeks or even months to see the final outcome. The areas that may be adjusted include the nostrils, tip of the nose, and bridge of the nose. The width, size, and position of the nose and nostrils and proportion in relation to the rest of the face are addressed.
Benefits
Post-surgery results are nearly always quite satisfactory for the patient. Over time the cartilage and facial tissues will settle, and the final results will begin to appear. The main benefits are improved breathing and an increase in confidence. Even relatively minor adjustments can bring about a strong boost in self-esteem and the patient’s pride in their appearance. Benefits can include:
- Nose size, in relation to facial balance
- Nose width, at the bridge or in the size and position of the nostrils
- Nose profile, with visible humps or depressions on the bridge
- Nasal tip that is enlarged or bulbous, drooping, upturned or hooked
- Nostrils that are large, wide or upturned
- Nasal asymmetry
Complications
As with any surgery, there is a potential for complications. Dr. O’Neill will discuss the risks during your consultation and answer any questions that you may have.
Be sure to follow your pre-surgical instructions carefully to help ensure the best possible outcome.
Downtime
As with any surgery, there will be downtime. Plan to take at least one week to rest and recover. For the first full day, you will need to keep your head elevated at all times. You will be able to return to normal activities within a few days, but strenuous activity should be avoided for at least two weeks. Avoid putting pressure on the nose, and contact sports, for six weeks. The downtime for rhinoplasty is around 7 days off of work. You will have a few restrictions after surgery, such as no showering for 72 hours, no submerging in water for 3 weeks, and no driving until 48 hours after anesthesia. You will wake up from surgery with a splint. The splint will be removed approximately 7 days after surgery.
